Three local construction professionals have been selected as finalists for an annual award.

The Associated Builders and Contractors Western Michigan Chapter, or ABC/WMC, has announced Joel Newton, detail manager at Windemuller, Shaun O’Brien, field superintendent at Buist Electric, and Scott Wondergem, senior field manager with Elzinga & Volkers, as finalists for the 2018 Craft Professional of the Year award.

The finalists were selected from journeyman applicants throughout West Michigan who best demonstrated "a passion for the trade, taking pride in hands-on work and the satisfaction of a job well done — to benefit both the construction industry and the greater community."

Jen Schottke, VP of workforce development at ABC/WMC, said the selection process began in mid-March with a call for nominations from the association’s member companies.

A panel of judges reviewed all the nominations and selected the three finalists.

“From there, the finalists sit for an interview with the judging panel to determine the winner,” Schottke said.

The Craft Professional of the Year will be named at the 2018 Excellence in Construction Awards on Sept. 13 at 20 Monroe Live in downtown Grand Rapids.
