Children's hospital ranks among 'best' in US
A local children’s hospital is considered one of the “best” in the country.
U.S. News & World Report features Spectrum Health Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in downtown Grand Rapids in its 2018-2019 “Best Children’s Hospitals” rankings, which were released last week.
The hospital ranks in the top 50 in six specialities: pediatric cancer; pediatric cardiology and heart surgery; pediatric nephrology; pediatric orthopedics; pediatric pulmonology; and pediatric urology.
The rankings are based on several factors: data that comes from hospital “outcomes,” such as mortality and infection rates; an annual survey of pediatric specialists; patient safety; “excellence,” such as how many fellowship programs exist; and family centeredness.
There were 118 children’s hospitals in the country that turned in enough data to be evaluated.
U.S. News introduced the “Best Children’s Hospitals” rankings in 2007 to help families of children with rare or life-threatening illnesses find the best medical care available.
“Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital is honored to be named yet again as one of the best children’s hospitals in the U.S.,” said Dr. Bob Connors, president, Spectrum Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.
‘“This noteworthy recognition speaks strongly to the dedication of our staff, who works tirelessly to provide exceptional care to our patients and families.”
