Bank appoints senior commercial executive
A bank with a major presence in the region has named its new senior commercial banker and senior vice president for West Michigan.
Cincinnati-based Fifth Third Bank, which has its third-largest market in West Michigan by number of employees, said last week it promoted Mike Chaffin to the role.
Most recently, he was the business banking national sales manager for Fifth Third in Atlanta.
Tom Welch, regional president for Fifth Third Bank in West Michigan, said he is “extremely happy” to welcome Chaffin to the leadership team.
“Mike has had a proven track record of strong leadership, exceptional customer service and expertise in commercial banking throughout his career,” Welch said. “I’m confident that he’ll be a valuable and trusted advisor to our customers while leading our commercial division.”
Chaffin said West Michigan has proved to be a hospitable place during his transition from the South to the Midwest.
“I look forward to working with the many thriving businesses in the area to help them further succeed and grow, as well as becoming involved in the community and with local nonprofits,” Chaffin said. “I expect to leverage the knowledge and experience from my recent role as a national sales manager for this region and our clients.”
Chaffin will lead the middle market banking team covering the West Michigan region, including Traverse City.
He will also be responsible for the area that includes Saginaw, Midland and Bay City.
His division offers investment banking, capital markets and other traditional banking products and services.
Chaffin has been with Fifth Third since 2012 in various roles.
He has more than 20 years of commercial and business banking experience at Fifth Third, Wells Fargo, First Choice Community Bank in Atlanta and Branch Banking & Trust, or BB&T, based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Chaffin led a team of more than 150 sales professionals throughout Fifth Third’s footprint, driving “best-in-class employee engagement” and “top-quartile customer experience results.”
While in Atlanta, he served as a board member of the Peachtree City Lacrosse Association and Youth Basketball Association, as well as EDGE Connection, an entrepreneurial incubator, and the South Atlanta Women’s Shelter.
He holds a B.S. from Kennesaw State University.
