A brewery in the area is bringing its brand of “historical and traditional” brews to all of Kent County.

Cedar Springs Brewing Company is bringing kegs of its Küsterer Bier brand of lagers and ales to restaurants and bars county-wide through a partnership with Grand Rapids-based West Side Beer Distributing.

The Küsterer Bier line is named for Christoph Kusterer, a German immigrant who arrived in West Michigan around 1844. One of the earliest brewers in Grand Rapids, Kusterer helped establish a brewing legacy that lasted over a century.

“Christoph Kusterer was one of the original brewers in Michigan,” said David Ringler, founder and owner, Cedar Springs Brewing Company. “The name’s been kind of lost, because Michigan went dry before the rest of the country, and the family got out of the business.”

The beers under the Küsterer Bier brand pay homage to his legacy by following German and Bavarian brewing traditions. The brand includes a variety of weissbiers, pilsner, märzen, bocks, dunkels and other lagers.

“As evidenced by the numerous awards the beers have won, Küsterer brands are brewed to the highest standards, and we feel the traditional German styles fill a current void in the local craft beer market,” said Kyle Klopcic, key account manager, West Side Beer Distributing.

West Side also began distributing Cedar Springs’ regular brews to restaurants and bars throughout Kent County in June.

At this point, the brewery only offers its beers on draft, but Ringler said it may package its products as it grows.
