The Grand Rapids Football Club’s women’s team finished a win shy of reaching the national championship of the United Women’s Soccer league.

The GRFC Women, a minor league team, played in the semifinals of the UWS playoffs, but they came up short when they lost to the Lancaster Inferno Rush, 4-3, on Saturday at Grandville High School.

Cindy Lay was the first to score for GRFC in the 17th minute, but less than two minutes later, the Inferno Rush tied the game.

GRFC’s Morgan Otteson tallied a goal in the 21st minute, but the Inferno Rush answered two minutes later to tie the game at 2.

The visitors took their first lead of the match in the 29th minute. Lay answered with a header just before halftime to lock the score at 3-3.

In the 55th minute, the Inferno Rush scored the game-winning goal.

The GRFC Women played 10 games this regular season, finishing with seven wins, two draws and one loss, good for 23 points and second place in the 2018 UWS standings.

UWS says its player pool is comprised of college players, aspiring and former professionals and "international stars."
