Gordon Food Service will open another of its urban grocery store concepts next week — this time in downtown Detroit.

The Wyoming-based company will host a grand opening on Aug. 6 for its new store at 2760 E. Jefferson Ave.

This is the first Gordon Foods Service store in Detroit for the grocery chain, although the food distribution side of the business has served area restaurants for “decades.”

The new store is part of the company’s recent foray into creating more compact stores for urban corridors, inspired by neighborhood grocers found in large markets, such as Manhattan.

Its Cascade Township location was the first example of its “city grocery store” concept.

Another is planned as the anchor tenant for the Diamond Place development in Grand Rapids, opening at 1003 Michigan St. NE this fall.

Detroit store offerings

The new location will feature fresh seasonal produce, fresh meat, fish, chicken tenders and rotisserie and hand-breaded roasted chicken made fresh each day.

The store will also feature fresh-squeezed orange juice and fresh in-store baked goods, including breads, cupcakes and cookies.

Staffing

Ryan Kulhanek will be the store’s general manager.

The company has hired 30 employees to staff the store.
