An ice cream maker in the region will release the second flavor in its small-batch “artisan” collection this week.

Holland-based Hudsonville Ice Cream said it is rolling out Sweetie-licious Pie Surprise as the second flavor in its Michigan Artisan Collection.

The first in the series, released in July, was Bowerman’s Blueberry Donut.

Sweetie-licious Pie Surprise pairs Hudsonville’s chocolate ice cream with filling from Sweetie-licious Bakery’s cherry-blueberry-raspberry pie — along with a “surprise” ingredient.

“The Sweetie-licious Pie Surprise flavor has a burst of berry filling and a hint of a mystery ingredient we use in one of our regular all-season flavors, so it was incredibly fun to make, and we think it will be just as fun to eat,” said Morgan Craig, flavor development scientist, Hudsonville Ice Cream.

Sweetie-licious is a family-owned bakery with locations in DeWitt and in the Grand Rapids Downtown Market, at 435 Ionia Ave. SW.

Owner Linda Hundt earned a National Pie Championship title in 2007. She and the bakery have since won 19 awards through the American Pie Council.

“Our most popular is the Cherry Berry Berry pie used for this flavor, which uses Michigan cherries and berries and is based on old family recipes,” said Hundt’s daughter, Ellie Sutherland.

The Michigan Artisan Collection is a small-batch collection of flavors “representative of the best parts of Michigan,” with ingredients sourced from local artisans and flavors suggested by fans.

The collection will include one final flavor to be announced this year.
