An eye care practice in the region has joined a management services organization.

Sussex Vision Center, which has three locations in West Michigan, joined Grand Rapids-based Blue Sky Vision last week.

Formerly owned by Michael Sussex, OD, for more than 30 years, the practice has locations in Coldwater, Three Rivers and Sturgis.

Price of the transaction was not disclosed.

According to Colleen Mulder, Blue Sky vice president of marketing, there will be no changes with services or staff, which includes the other Sussex Vision provider, Matt Austin, OD.

Mulder said Sussex, as the well as the other previous owners of practices Blue Sky has acquired, will continue to participate in business decisions concerning the practice and will continue making decisions about care provided.

“Our partners are doctors who have been very successful in their businesses, which is why we choose to partner with them,” Mulder said. “They are not failing companies, and we are available with resources for any part of their business.”

Mulder said the partnership with Sussex Vision gives the practice access to HR, IT, procurement, marketing and future growth potential in its three markets.

“I wanted to find the right partners as I begin my gradual transition to retirement,” Sussex said. “With the resources of Blue Sky Vision and expertise of consulting surgeons in West Michigan for referrals, our patients in southwest Michigan will continue to receive great care locally and behind-the-scenes practice benefits that will enhance their overall experience.”

Blue Sky Vision

Blue Sky Vision, formerly Great Lakes Management Services Organization, was formed in 2017 by Chicago-based Sterling Partners, a private equity firm, as a practice management services organization.

It also manages more than 50 providers at Grand Rapids Ophthalmology and its related retail optical and surgical facility businesses, including Lakeshore Eye in East Grand Rapids, the Walker Surgical Center in Walker and Muskegon-based Shoreline Vision.
