A group of West Michigan employers have been cited in a list of organizations doing “high-quality diversity and inclusion work.”

Diversity Best Practices, a division of New York-based Working Mother Media, released its second-annual “Inclusion Index,” and three West Michigan-based employers made the list, as well as two other Michigan-based employers.

The index, built on data compiled by The Working Mother Research Institute, shows how participating organizations scored in three areas: diversity and inclusion practices in recruitment, retention and advancement; organizational culture; and demographic transparency.

Diversity Best Practices said the information is intended to help employers “understand gaps in demographic representation” and create a “strategic roadmap” for improvement.

This year, 124 employers participated, twice the amount from last year.

Participants were scored in three areas: best practices in recruitment, retention and advancement of people from under-represented groups — including women, racial/ethnic minorities, people with disabilities and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) people; creating an inclusive culture through leadership, communications and employee engagement; and transparency in willingness to share workforce demographic data.

Diversity Best Practices did not set a target number of organizations to recognize in the list.

Instead, any participant with a score of 65 percent or higher qualified for the general “Inclusion Index,” of which there were 42 this year.

Those with scores of 81 percent or higher — a total of 31 for 2018 — were recognized as “Leading Organizations" in the index.

The total number of organizations in the index is 73.
