An interior design firm has opened a location in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids.

Rodolfo Gonzales Interior Design opened its new location at 40 Monroe Center St. NW early last week.

The 4,200-square-foot space features a Baker Furniture showroom and a design studio housed in the historic Peck Building.

The space will also be home to a new "high-end" art gallery representing local artists and artists from across the world.

“Our search for the ideal space had to fulfill a multitude of criteria for us to accommodate our offerings,” Gonzales said.

Owners Rodolfo Gonzales and Robert Gross partnered with Grand Rapids-based Rockford Construction on the project.

The Rockford team performed the majority of the interior renovations on the space and created a new entrance designed by Gonzales.

Mike Mraz, managing partner of real estate development at Rockford Construction, believes Rodolfo Gonzales Interior Design brings added energy to an already lively retail corridor.

“We’re excited to offer another high-quality retail option along Monroe Center,” Mraz said.

Gonzales’ design career spans more than 30 years. After graduating from the Harrington Institute of Interior Design in Chicago, he began his career in Chicago’s Merchandise Mart as the lead interior designer for Baker Furniture’s retail and trade showrooms. His work as lead designer for Baker Furniture often brought him to Grand Rapids.

The new showroom also signifies a return of Baker Furniture to its roots. The company was founded in Grand Rapids over a century ago, but it relocated its production facilities to North Carolina in 2006.

“We are excited to bring Baker back home to Grand Rapids and continue the legacy of this world-class furniture maker throughout western Michigan,” Gross said.

Rodolfo Gonzales Interior Design opened its first showroom in Raleigh, North Carolina in 2007.

The firm is an authorized Baker, Milling Road and McGuire furniture dealer and represents many of the other manufacturers in the furniture industry.

The firm specializes in custom designs and works in all styles, including traditional, transitional and contemporary. The latest offerings from major brands are available to clients, including furniture, lighting, window treatments, textiles, rugs, art and more.
