A maker of wire components for medical devices is investing $3.75 million to expand in the region and create 80 jobs in the process.

Fruitport-based Motion Dynamics Holdings plans to construct a 28,000-square-foot addition and upgrade infrastructure at its facility in Fruitport, at 5621 Airline Rd., the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, or MEDC, said yesterday.

The company’s manufacturing division for medical device components has seen rapid growth since the company was acquired by Los Angeles-based Vance Street Capital in 2016, MEDC said.

As a result, the company has outgrown its existing 40,000-square-foot facility, leading to capacity issues with its existing on-site septic system. To support its growth, the company must access the local municipal sanitary sewer system, leading to the expansion.

MEDC said that without addressing the issue, the company would have expanded in California, where most of its customers are located.

“We are honored that Motion Dynamics has chosen to invest in Fruitport Township,” said Jonathan Wilson, economic development manager, Muskegon County. “Their commitment to grow and create jobs in Muskegon County will strengthen our region and provide more jobs for our talented workforce.”

Incentives

MEDC contributed a $530,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant to the project.

Fruitport Township has offered a 50-percent reduction in property taxes for the project.

Motion Dynamics

Established in 1992, Motion Dynamics Corporation manufactures custom micro springs, medical coils and wire components, requiring expertise in laser welding and guide wires.

The company’s primary focus is on the design, production and assembly of wire components for medical devices, mostly for neurological and cardiology applications, such as pacemakers and catheters.

Its only manufacturing location has 138 employees.
