A local accounting firm has elected a long-time employee to the position of shareholder.

Grand Rapids-based Hungerford Nichols CPAs + Advisors said last week it elected Jon Sytsma, a certified public accountant, to the role, effective Sept. 1.

Sytsma specializes in tax planning, compliance and developing tax-efficient strategies for privately held businesses and their shareholders.

Rick Chrisman, managing shareholder at Hungerford Nichols, said the firm is “excited to have Jon as part of our shareholder team.”

“Our clients value his dedication to being on the forefront of the tax laws and keeping them informed on how the changes will impact their business,” Chrisman said. “Jon’s technical skills are truly an asset to our firm, as well as his commitment to providing good ideas and a holistic approach to client service.”

Sytsma’s background

Sytsma completed his 11th tax season with Hungerford Nichols this year.

He has experience in taxation of and planning for various forms of business entities, such as corporations, partnership and limited liability companies.

Sytsma is also well-versed in tax compliance and planning for various industries, such as manufacturing, distribution, transportation, construction and real estate, as well as professional services that include doctors, dentists, marketing and software.

A frequent presenter on tax laws and tax changes, Sytsma is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants. He also serves as treasurer on the board of Arbor Circle.

He earned his B.B.A. degree from Calvin College in 2003 and his M.S. in taxation from Grand Valley State University in 2011.
