The interim president has been named for a local hospital.

Mercy Health said yesterday it appointed Dr. David Baumgartner to the role at Mercy Health Saint Mary's in Grand Rapids.

Baumgartner, who will remain chief medical officer for Mercy Health Saint Mary's, will begin his duties on Oct. 22, when current President Bill Manns will become president of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System's Ann Arbor and Livingston hospitals.

Baumgartner will fulfill the interim role until a permanent president for Mercy Health Saint Mary’s has been selected.

His career with Saint Mary's includes working as a physician of infectious disease and administrative leadership.

He helped create the Mercy Health Infectious Disease McAuley Program for HIV patients and served there for 30 years, before retiring in 2017 to focus on his CMO role.

He began his 46-year career with the hospital at 16 in the housekeeping department.

"Dr. Baumgartner demonstrates passion for the mission of Mercy Health," said Julie Ridenour, board chair, Mercy Health Saint Mary's. "He has a tremendous leadership style, and his longevity and breadth of experience with the organization give him a unique perspective on leading the organization.”

He is active in the Infectious Diseases Society of America, Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America and American Association for Physician Leadership.

His medical degree is from Wayne State University, and he completed a fellowship in infectious disease at the University of Michigan.

A search committee that includes Rob Casalou, president and CEO of Mercy Health and the Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, as well as Mercy Health Saint Mary's board members has begun a national search for the next president of Mercy Health St. Mary’s.

The search committee will work with Mercy Health’s parent company, Livonia-based Trinity Health, on the final selection.
