Change Ups: Long Road Distillers snags top honors

Long Road Distillers took home top honors for the second year in a row. The distillery was named Best Craft Specialty Spirits Distillery in the United States as part of the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Travel Awards. Long Road Distillers topped a list of 20 nominees from around the country that were chosen by a panel of American spirits experts. Over Long Road’s three-year history, the distillery has gained much attention for its award-winning, locally sourced and craft-distilled lineup of spirits, including gins, vodkas, aquavits, whiskies and liqueurs.

ACCOUNTING

Hungerford Nichols CPAs + Advisors announced manager Jenn Rogell earned her Certified Fraud Examiner certification.

ADVERTISING & MARKETING

Kalamazoo-based LKF Marketing announced the addition of Amy Sours to the newly created role of executive assistant. Sours will assist LKF President Heather Isch with day-to-day and long-range projects in addition to scheduling and office management duties.

Peopledesign founders Yang Kim and Kevin Budelmann spoke recently at the University and College Designers Association’s 48th annual Design Conference held at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. Budelmann discussed during the general session, “Education in an Era of Choice,” and Kim, Budelmann and Grand Valley State University representatives in a special breakout session talked about "Working Across Departments Case Study: GVSU Laker Effect.”

ARTS

The Kalamazoo Valley Museum’s exhibit of drawings and photographs, “Frank Lloyd Wright: Architecture of the Interior,” will be on display through Dec. 9

St. Cecilia Music Center will kick off its 135th year anniversary season Oct. 11 with 10-time Grammy Award-winner jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie. Details: scmc-online.org.

The Grand Rapids Public Museum will host a traveling exhibit called “Expedition: Dinosaur” starting Oct. 13 through spring 2019, with a special opening party fundraiser from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. benefiting the GRPM. “Expedition: Dinosaur” will let visitors become paleontologists as they explore the Mesozoic-era dinosaurs and see and control life-size animatronic dinosaurs. Rehmann was named MSSP Alert’s Top 100 Managed Security Services Providers list for 2018. Rob Hayes, president and CEO of Portage-based Benefit Administrative Services International Corp., is the recipient of WEX Health’s 2017 Partner Excellence Award for outstanding business achievements and for his efforts as a champion in the market for third party administrators, as well as his strong, intelligent and visionary leadership.

3:11 Youth Housing received the Youth MOVE National Rock Star Award for Organization of the Year, for promoting a youth-centered voice at all levels within its organization.

EDUCATION

Kalamazoo Valley Community College’s culinary student-run 418 Restaurant and Havirmill Café reopened with the start of the fall semester. The 418 is open for dinner Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7 p.m., and reservations are required by calling (269) 548-3200. The Havirmill Café is open from 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. for breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday. American fare is offered at the café at lunch, and a student-selected four-course menu is available in the 418 Restaurant.

GOVERNMENT

The city of Grand Rapids is the recipient of The National Association of Government Web Professionals’ Pinnacle Award in the large cities category for the website grandrapidsmi.gov.

HEALTH

Heather Alberda, American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists, certified sexuality educator with the Ottawa County Department of Public Health, received the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services 2018 Outstanding Innovation Award.

Priority Health announced Diane Wolfenden was named the new vice president of the East Region; Michael Jasperson is vice president of Provider Network – East Region, replacing Richard O’Donnell, who will retire in April 2019.

March of the Dimes West Michigan announced Stephanie Gonda, director of sales at Townsquare Media, will serve as chair for the Nov. 12 Grand Rapids Signature Chefs Auction, and that Dr. Melinda Johnson, vice president, department chief for the Department of Women’s Health at the Spectrum Health Medical Group, will be receiving the 2018 West Michigan Impact Award at the event.

HUMAN SERVICES

Bethany Christian Services is one of three finalists for Kolbe Corp.’s Conative Excellence Enterprise Award for understanding human potential transcends industries and sectors. The winner will be announced, along with the individual Professional Award recipient, at the Conation Nation Symposium in Scottsdale, Arizona, Oct. 25-26.

Mel Trotter Ministries’ Peter C. and Emajean Cook Cafeteria was renovated thanks to a donation from the Peter C. & Emajean Cook Foundation. Improvements to the cafeteria include original wood floor restoration, replacing and returning windows to original height, reconfiguring the buffet areas, inspirational décor, a new dish return line and a host stand.

LEISURE & RECREATION

DeVos Place, Kent District Library and GrandCon Gaming Convention hosted a board game drive throughout August to benefit the children and families at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. Over 35 board games were collected through the drive hosted at various Kent District Library locations and were delivered to the kids at the children’s hospital.

NONPROFITS 

The West Michigan Center for Arts + Technology welcomed Brandy Arnold as program manager working in the Step Year and Community Catalyst programs. Arnold previously served as youth and inclusion specialist at Kids’ Food Basket, focusing on youth development and co-leading the organization’s equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

Lambert, Edwards & Associates marked its 20-year anniversary by changing its name to Lambert & Co., for clarity and impact, while retaining the ampersand as a nod to its heritage and the associates who have made the firm Michigan’s largest public relations agency and a top-10 investor relations firm nationally. The branding effort includes a new logo, website and signage that have gone into effect for its firm offices in Grand Rapids, Lansing, Detroit and New York City.

SUSTAINABLITY

Kalamazoo Valley Community College purchased the XRF Analyzer, a handheld X-ray unit that tells the difference between varying components in a mixture or to quantify components in a material. It will be used for its engineering, design, manufacturing, technology, chemistry and geology classes.

OST announced the additions of Jaredt Hultlink, application development; Paige Innes, professional services office, administrative assistant; and Amanda Malaric, application support.

X-Rite Inc. and its subsidiary Pantone LLC announced the launch of ColorCert QA, a new pressroom quality assurance software designed to drive excellence in the pressroom by helping customers manage standards more efficiently and optimize jobs on press and facilitate strong ink room integration. With improved quality control, commercial and package printers can reduce the time and complexity associated with managing color standards and minimize waste, ultimately reducing reprints and rejections and increasing the number of jobs they are able to run per shift.

TRAVEL & TOURISM

The Gerald R. Ford International Airport released a free mobile app available on Android and iOS that features real-time flight departure and arrival information, updates on parking availability at the airport and security wait times, plus amenities such as food and beverage locations, kids play areas, nursing rooms and the military welcome center. Passengers also can connect with airport ground transportation options available at the airport.
