Distillery releasing two spirits
A local award-winning distillery is rolling out two spirits this fall.
Grand Rapids-based Gray Skies Distillery released its Michigan Straight Rye Whiskey yesterday and will follow-up with a limited-edition release of its Breakfast Bourbon on Nov. 20.
Both spirits will be available for purchase in the tasting room at 700 Ottawa Ave. NW and through licensed retailers, bars and restaurants across Michigan.
Michigan Straight Rye Whiskey was aged in new charred oak barrels for over two years and bottled at 90 proof.
Breakfast Bourbon was aged over two years and bottled at 87 proof. It spent time in two different barrels, starting in new charred oak barrels before it was finished for nine months in maple syrup casks.
“Michigan Straight Rye Whiskey is a perfect complement to the coming cold weather,” said Steve Vander Pol, co-owner, Gray Skies Distillery. “It’s the ultimate cocktail whiskey, with a strong rye backbone that stands up to other ingredients.
“Breakfast Bourbon offers a playful twist on a typical bourbon whiskey. Unlike our rye, this is not a straight spirit. … The maple finish amplifies the sweetness inherent in bourbon whiskey and imparts a creamy mouth-feel to the viscous finished spirit.”
The two whiskeys bring the total number of American whiskeys Gray Skies Distillery offers up to five, alongside its Breakfast Rye, Single Malt Whiskey and Michigan Straight Bourbon Whiskey.
Gray Skies Distillery was named Michigan Distillery of the Year in 2016 at the seventh-annual New York International Spirits Competition on the strength of its gold-medal-winning Barrel Finished Gin.
Gray Skies Distillery was also honored at the fifth-annual American Craft Spirits Association Distillers Convention in Pittsburgh earlier this year. The distillery took home two bronze medals for its Finished Gin in the gin category and for Gray Skies Coffee Liqueur in the specialty spirits category.
