Health system hires doctor

A health system in the area has named the lead of its new adult and pediatric rheumatology service line.

Rheumatology specialist Dr. James Birmingham began seeing patients last week for Metro Health - University of Michigan Health, based at the main campus in Wyoming, at 5900 Byron Center Ave. SW.

Birmingham specializes in pediatric rheumatology and is one of a few providers in West Michigan.

He treats children with juvenile arthritis, systematic and localized forms of scleroderma, juvenile onset dermatomyositis, lupus and auto-inflammatory syndromes, such as CAPS, Muckle-Wells and FMF.

Birmingham has worked for West Michigan Rheumatology, Mercy Health and as the division chief for pediatric rheumatology at Spectrum Health.

He received his medical degree from The Ohio State University.

He completed a pediatric residency at Michigan State University and an adult and pediatric rheumatology fellowship at Duke University Medical Center.
