Grocery chain raises $1M for charities
The foundation of a grocery store chain has concluded its final fund drive for 2018 and raised more than $1 million over the year for causes across the Midwest.
The SpartanNash Foundation said last month its final scan campaign to provide hunger relief raised $278,105 to support more than 100 food pantries and food banks in Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
“We understand the importance of having healthy, affordable food that is accessible to everyone, and we are proud to join with our store guests to support our local food banks and food pantries and the work they do in our local communities,” said Meredith Gremel, VP of corporate affairs and communications at Byron Center-based SpartanNash and executive director of the SpartanNash Foundation.
Simultaneous check presentations to the campaign's nonprofit recipients took place company-wide this week.
Year-long scan campaigns
The campaign for hunger relief was the fourth scan campaign the SpartanNash Foundation executed in 2018.
Together, the campaigns raised $1,051,305 to benefit local Special Olympics offices, Habitat for Humanity offices, patriotic partners and local food banks.
This was the second consecutive year the foundation’s annual scan campaign fundraising efforts have topped $1 million.
All proceeds were granted to the foundation’s nonprofit partners through customer contributions at participating SpartanNash stores.
West Michigan beneficiaries of hunger-relief campaign
$6,200 was granted to Food Bank of South Central Michigan on behalf of four Family Fare stores (Battle Creek)
$4,725 was granted to LOVE in Action on behalf of D&W Fresh Market (Grand Haven)
$4,475 was granted to Oakwood Neighborhood Association Food Pantry on behalf of D&W Fresh Market (Kalamazoo)
