Latin-Asian restaurant closes doors
The owner of a Latin-Asian fusion restaurant in Grand Rapids has closed the location.
Owner-chef Anthony “Tony” Craig said today he has permanently closed Georgina’s Grand Rapids, at 724 Wealthy St. SE.
The restaurant, which opened in January 2018, fused traditions from around the world to create dishes ranging from Latin tacos to spicy comfort-food offerings with an Asian twist.
“I’d like to thank everyone who has supported my dreams in the last year of Georgina’s Grand Rapids,” Craig said in a Facebook post. “However, with sincere thought and consideration, the Grand Rapids location is officially closed. … Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Craig also owns Georgina’s Taqueria in Traverse City, which he opened at 236 E. Front St. in 2013.
In a message to the Business Journal, Craig cited personal stressors and the need to seek well-being as the reasons for the closure and said he’s moving all current business ventures to Traverse City.
Gift certificates issued at Georgina’s Grand Rapids will be redeemable at the Traverse City location, he said.
The Business Journal previously reported that Georgina’s LLC, dba Georgina’s Taqueria in Traverse City, is being sued by a former employee of the Traverse City location who's alleging sexual harassment and retaliation.
The federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, or EEOC, filed the suit on June 15 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan on behalf of Jessica Werthen and “other similarly aggrieved female employees.”
The suit accuses Craig of engaging in “sex discrimination” and “inappropriate physical contact” with female employees at the Traverse City Georgina’s.
Werthen alleges she filed a written complaint of harassment by Craig in February 2016 to another manager and was fired by Craig 10 minutes later.
Traverse City attorney Matthew Vermetten is representing Craig and has said his client denies the allegations.
The lawsuit is in pre-trial discovery until next summer. A court date has not yet been set.
