A local senior living developer has broken ground on an addition to its Alger Heights community.

Care Cardinal has begun construction on two additions to Care Cardinal North and South, 1015 28th St. SE in Alger Heights.

The new dwelling places, Care Cardinal East and West, will be 7,000 square feet each and will house 20 residents each, with one specifically designed for memory care residents.

“Creating smaller homes maximizes the opportunity for neighbors to create meaningful connections with each other,” said Justin Welker, Care Cardinal president. “Together, they create trust, accountability and personal care in a home environment.”

Care Cardinal also has two other communities in Michigan — Care Cardinal Macatawa, located in Holland, and Care Cardinal Belmont, scheduled to open in the spring.

The new Alger Heights community represents nearly a $2.5 million investment. Care Cardinal also recently renovated Care Cardinal North and South, adding new porches and renovating bedrooms, bathrooms and common areas to encourage interaction between residents.

Care Cardinal East and West are scheduled to open in summer 2019. The new buildings were designed by Grand Rapids-based Integrated Architecture and are being built by Honor Construction. Financing is through United Bank of Michigan.
