Whirlpool reports results of smart home survey

A new global survey from Whirlpool Corporation is helping paint a picture of what future smart homes will look like — and what related products it will unveil soon.

More than 2,000 homeowners and renters in four regions of the world responded to the Whirlpool Global Innovation Survey, showing what consumers are craving — smart features that are “easy to understand” and are a “practical and efficient” addition to everyday household tasks, according to Benton Harbor-based Whirlpool Corporation yesterday.

“The responses we received to this survey were abundantly clear: Consumers said they need simpler, faster ways to manage their lives — in other words, they still feel products for the home aren’t solving these problems,” said Christian Gianni, SVP of product development, Whirlpool Corporation.

“When it comes to smart home technology adoption, the technology must provide a purposeful solution in their lives.”

The survey was conducted by Research Now on behalf of Whirlpool Corporation and represents responses from consumers in the U.S., India, Brazil and France.

The survey questioned respondents on their daily routines and preferences when it comes to home appliances.

Results

— 72 percent of respondents are looking for simpler, faster ways to help manage their lives
— More than half admit to feeling that cooking (52 percent) and doing laundry (58 percent) take up more than the preferred amount of time
— 74 percent are interested in smart appliance features that reduce food waste
— 75 percent are interested in smart appliance features that manage water usage
— 78 percent are interested in smart appliance features that help them save money
— 64 percent say it’s important that their appliances help save on electricity costs
— 69 percent actively seek out products that can be personalized to their preferences

CES 2019 innovations

At the annual Consumer Electronics Show, or CES, from Jan. 8-11 in Las Vegas, Whirlpool Corporation will introduce more than 20 new products and services across its portfolio of brands that underscore the needs cited in the Whirlpool Global Innovation Survey.

With its Yummly digital recipe platform, and through collaborations with other leaders in the tech space, the company will announce innovations that “take friction out of every step of the cooking and laundry process and help consumers save money and reduce waste in the process.”

Whirlpool declined to provide a specific preview of its CES 2019 innovations. 

It will be at booth No. 41925 in the smart home section at the Sands Expo Center.
