Firefighters rescued a pair of workers yesterday who were trapped six stories high outside of Grand Rapids City Hall.

Firefighters used harnesses and ropes to safely lower the two workers to the ground after they became stuck in an elevator lift.

Battalion Chief David Noorman said the workers were stuck in the lift for about 45 minutes after its emergency brake engaged.

Noorman said one firefighter was lowered in a basket to the lift to help the workers, who were then placed in harnesses and lowered to the ground, one by one.

No one was injured.

Other workers clapped when both men were safely on the ground.

The two men were working on a project to replace components in the building's HVAC system.
