Coffee company settling into new HQ on West Side
A local coffee company’s new 165,000-square-foot headquarters on the city’s West Side is in full operation.
Ferris Coffee & Nut Co.'s new headquarters is in the former American Seating building at 839 Seward Ave. NW in Grand Rapids.
Ferris started relocating last September.
The building is double the size of its former headquarters at 227 Winter Ave. NW in Grand Rapids and promotes interconnectivity by bringing the company’s various departments to one location.
The space houses Ferris’ offices, warehouse, distribution center and manufacturing facilities, as well as a new retail space and coffee bar.
Also coming in early 2019 are a free monthly coffee-tasting and facility tour, coffee education lab and rentable conference spaces.
About 125 employees are based at the new location.
“We wanted to bring our entire team under one roof and find a spot that was more conducive to manufacturing,” said David Van Tongeren, VP of talent and resource strategy, Ferris Coffee & Nut Co.
“The build out also offered us the opportunity to create a world-class training and education space.”
Firms on the project
Forest Hills-based Erhardt Construction performed the build out of the space starting in April 2018.
The project included the demolition of American Seating equipment and plumbing systems, millwork and the installation of insulated metal and liner paneling.
Erhardt also assisted in the design process that integrated Ferris’ manufacturing equipment into the facility.
Lansing-based C2AE served as architect for the project and worked alongside Grand Rapids-based Interphase Interiors for the interior design. The building's furniture is by Haworth and Grand Rapids Chair.
Financing for the $14-million project, including property acquisition, was through Holland Township-based Macatawa Bank.
Winter Avenue location
Ferris’ Winter Avenue coffee shop will remain open.
The company also plans to offer public meeting rooms in the Winter Avenue shop now that its store and offices have relocated.
