A locally based food distributor has selected a new leader to oversee its information technology strategy.

Byron Center-based SpartanNash said it hired Arif Dar as chief information officer and senior vice president, effective Jan. 2.

He is replacing David deS. Couch, who will retire on Feb. 2.

Dar will report to David Staples, president and CEO of SpartanNash.

“We look forward to having Arif join the company, as his record of large-scale IT strategic planning and execution, combined with his vision, collaborative leadership, supply chain experience and knowledge of the food distribution industry lay the foundation for success at SpartanNash,” Staples said.

Responsibilities

Dar will be responsible for the development and execution of the enterprise-wide IT strategy, ensuring alignment with the enterprise’s overall business strategy and providing “strategic direction and oversight” for the design, development, operation and support of IT systems and programs.

The oversight will include the management of enterprise architecture, applications, security, risk, infrastructure and operations support.

He will also be charged with leading the IT team and “leveraging technologies to drive and sustain a competitive advantage.”

Dar’s background

Since 2015, Dar has served as chief information officer for Racine, Wisconsin-based SC Johnson & Sons, a private global manufacturer of household cleaning supplies and consumer goods with operations in more than 60 countries.

Dar has also held executive IT positions at Maple Leaf Foods, Bombardier Transportation, General Motors, Tyco International and General Electric.

He holds an M.B.A. in management information systems and operations from the University of Western Ontario, an M.S. in communication systems and radio engineering from King’s College in London and a B.S. in electronics and electrical engineering from the University of Engineering & Technology in Lahore, Pakistan.
