Grand Rapids has been ranked the 51st “best metro” for professionals in STEM occupations.

The ranking, “2019’s Best Metro Areas for STEM Professionals,” was created by personal finance website WalletHub and released today.

The latest U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics analysis found science, technology, engineering and math professions grew at more than twice the rate non-STEM jobs did between 2009 and 2015, according to WalletHub.

To create the “Best Metro Areas for STEM Professionals” ranking, WalletHub compared the 100 largest metros in the U.S. across three primary dimensions: professional opportunities, STEM-friendliness and quality of life.

The data set includes 20 metrics, including per-capita job openings for STEM graduates, annual median wage growth for STEM jobs and projected demand for STEM workers by 2020.

The Detroit metro ranks No. 49.
