Four companies in the region rank among the nation’s "best" for diversity.

Kalamazoo-based Stryker, Benton Harbor-based Whirlpool Corporation, Ada-based Amway and Zeeland-based Gentex were named to the 2019 “Best Employers for Diversity” ranking published by Forbes this month.

The ranking recognizes companies that embrace diversity and inclusion and the valuable role they play in attracting talented employees and building a strong business.

Stryker ranks No. 104, Whirlpool is No. 356, Amway is No. 360 and Gentex ranks No. 426.

These are the top five organizations in the ranking: Broomfield, Colorado-based Ball; New York-based Nielsen; Chattanooga, Tennessee-based Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee; Kent, Ohio-based Kent State University; and Boston-based Vertex Pharmaceuticals.

Methodology

Forbes partnered with research firm Statista to compile the second-annual ranking.

Statista surveyed 50,000 Americans working for companies with at least 1,000 employees, asking them to rate their employers on issues of age, gender, ethnicity, disability and sexual orientation equality, as well as general diversity.

Responses from underrepresented groups, such as ethnic minorities, received greater weight.

Statista also looked for which companies have “the most diverse boards and executive ranks and the most proactive diversity and inclusion initiatives.”
