A local restaurant company has named its new in-house general counsel.

Grand Rapids-based Meritage Hospitality Group appointed Robert Potts to the role last month.

Potts will lead the company’s legal and compliance strategies and activities.

“We are excited to bring Robert onboard as general counsel,” said Robert Schermer Jr., CEO, Meritage Hospitality Group. “He’s been a tremendous partner, and his background, passion and understanding of our business make him uniquely suited for this role.”

Potts has been a consulting attorney for Meritage since 2011 and served as the company’s VP of real estate from 2001 to 2008.

From 1989 to 2001, Potts worked at Meijer, where he held the position of senior counsel.
