Winter Games in full swing

An array of sports competitions are on tap this weekend.

The main weekend of the Meijer State Games of Michigan Winter Games will begin on Friday and run through Sunday, Feb. 15-17.

The event begins with an opening ceremony, hosted by the Grand Rapids Griffins, at 7 p.m. Friday at Van Andel Arena. An athlete parade will take place during the first intermission of the hockey game.

The Winter Games feature such sports as archery, basketball, cross country skiing (Nordic and Olympic), disc golf, fatbike racing, fencing, shooting sports, speed skating, weightlifting and wrestling.

The Meijer State Games of Michigan held its first sporting events of the Winter Games on Feb. 2, 9 and 10, with participants in karate, darts, “try-athlon” and bowling. The bowling tournament hosted 140 participants, maxing out its registration cap.
