A West Michigan holding company of packaging suppliers has acquired an out-of-state container business.

Caledonia-based Opus Packaging Group acquired Mount Carmel, Illinois-based Wabash Container Corporation, effective March 1, according to Opus.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Wabash has been owned by Steve Burton and Leann Burton since 2006.

“Our goal is to maintain the family atmosphere that Steve and Leann have developed during their ownership of Wabash,” said Kevin Manor, owner of Opus, and Butch Stoner, owner of its subsidiary, Action Packaging.

They said Steve Burton will join the Opus team and “continue directing day-to-day operations at Wabash,” which is now a division of Opus.

Wabash joins two other companies in the Opus portfolio — New Bremen, Ohio-based Safeway Packaging, and Action Packaging, which has locations in Jackson and Caledonia.

Opus is also planning to open a manufacturing facility in Indianapolis in June.

“The acquisition of Wabash and expansion to Indianapolis immediately strengthens and balances our product and geographic portfolio to better serve our customers,” Stoner and Manor said.

“Our vision of becoming a world-class provider in packaging solutions while leading in the markets we serve will be greatly enhanced by the acquisition. … We are excited to welcome the Wabash associates to the team.”
