Change Ups: Cutler Martin joins firm grandfather founded

Cutler Martin joined the firm his grandfather, William G. Martin, founded in 1962. Cutler’s primary focus with Martin Commercial Properties will be investment services and business development. He studied political science at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. Martin Commercial Properties has offices in Grand Rapids and Lansing. For the past 35-plus years, the firm had been led by Martin’s father, Van W. Martin.

Gaslight Promotions of Grand Rapids was acquired by Stevensville-based Competitive Edge.

ARCHITECTURE & ENGINEERING

Maghan Homan joined Driesenga & Associates Inc. as staff engineer in the firm’s civil engineering department in its Holland office. Grand Rapids civil engineers and friends, Larry Fleis and Steve VandenBrink, started Fleis & VandenBrink in 1993. Today, the firm has 200 employees and nine offices.

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Michigan announced Fleis & VandenBrink Engineering Inc. received its ACEC/M Large Firm of the Year Award during its recent Engineering & Surveying Excellence Awards Gala.

ARTS

Grand Rapids artist Joshua Adam Risner was commissioned to paint the portrait of former Gov. Rick Snyder. Once completed, it will be placed on permanent display in the Michigan State Capitol. A formal unveiling ceremony is expected mid-to-late 2019.

The Board of Library Commissioners of the Grand Rapids Public Library elected William Baldridge as president and Kent Sparks as vice president/secretary.

AWARDS

Harold M. Johnson, Jr. was posthumously awarded the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors - Michigan’s Distinguished Service Award, awarded annually in recognition of outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession and the community. Johnson was an active member of the association for more than 50 years and served on numerous committees and as president in 1977.

James Marosi, managing director - investments, of Wells Fargo Advisors in Grand Rapids was recognized on the 2019 Best in State Wealth Advisor list by Forbes.

John Kuiper, executive vice president of Colliers International West Michigan, was inducted into the 2018 Colliers International Everest Club for his performance in the region’s industrial sector. The Everest Club recognizes the top 10 percent of Colliers professionals in brokerage, valuation and corporate solutions in the U.S. based on revenue production.

National Nail’s CAMO is the recipient of the International Builder Show’s 2019 Best of IBS Awards’ Best Outdoor Living Product.

Grand Rapids Community College’s Sterile Processing Technician Registered Apprenticeship Program received a 2019 Impact Award from the Michigan Works! Association. The award recognizes significant economic accomplishments and showcases the impact of new jobs, transformational training and talent pipeline development.

ENERGY

Detroit-based DTE Energy announced it spent $66 million with 215 companies in West Michigan in 2018, creating and sustaining more than 300 jobs.

FINANCIAL SERVICES

Greenleaf Trust announced the additions of Patrick Bruining and Mercedes Sims as trust operations specialists; Kristin Sullivan as a senior recruiter; and Taylor Farrell as a marketing assistant.

Miller Johnson Vice Chair of Mental Health Law Practice Group Neil Marchand was recently appointed to be one of the 12 members of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Recipient Rights Appeals Committee.

The 36th annual Grand Rapids Police Department Awards Dinner honored several employees and community members for their exceptional work in 2018: 2018 Police Officers of the Year: Erika Fannon and Sean McCamman; and Civilian Employee of the Year for 2018: Travis Bravata.

HEALTH

Metro Health – University of Michigan Health in Wyoming added the following physicians: Kevin Brader, M.D., a gynecologic oncologist who brings more than a decade of experience in robotic surgery to treat women experiencing cancer of the reproductive organs; Sulsal Haque, M.D., medical oncologist, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of oncologic malignancies and the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant hematologic disorders; and Ahmet Tunceroglu, M.D., Ph.D., specializes in radiation oncology, the use of ionizing radiation in the treatment of cancer.

Spectrum Health Grand Rapids earned the Magnet designation for exceptional nursing for a third time. The American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition Program is the highest international distinction a health care organization can receive for nursing excellence and outstanding patient care. Magnet hospitals are designated for four years. Spectrum Health Grand Rapids was initially designated in 2009 and re-designated in 2014.

AHC+Hospitality appointed Melissa Stanley, Nicholas Curtis, Jeffrey Burns and Lindsey Ochmanski as operations managers of the 130-room AC Hotel Grand Rapids Downtown, slated to open in the spring.

LEISURE & RECREATION

The Ottawa County Parks and Recreation Commission and Ottawa County Parks Foundation have reached agreements with three landowners to sell 118 acres of land in Robinson Township at the south end of Stearns Bayou. This land includes 6,350 feet of frontage along Stearns Creek and will protect nearly 27 acres of high-quality wetland, all of which will create a park along the Grand River Greenway. The acquisition helps accomplish the goal of adding 700 acres of park land to the Grand River Greenway over the next five years; a donation to the campaign is a key part of the funding for the purchase.

Muskegon-based EarthTronics introduced a LED Yard Light Series that delivers lumens and lumens per watt for multiple commercial, educational and residential dusk to dawn large area applications ranging from yards, walkways, parking, campus greens and mixed-use, surrounding spaces to home security.

TRANSPORTATION

The Gerald R. Ford International Airport Authority Board unanimously approved the addition of AvFlight, a fixed base operator, to the Gerald R. Ford International Airport. This new aviation support services company will offer a wide range of services, including fuel sales, hangar storage, aircraft ground handling services, de-icing, concierge services and all matters related to general and business aviation.

Aircraft management company RAI Jets LLC in Kalamazoo launched its new website at flyrai.com, which features a more interactive and visually appealing online booking system for jet charter customers, as well as descriptions of the company’s emerging service offerings.
