A land brokerage for oil and gas companies has named its next president.

Ludington-based Western Land Services, or WLS, hired Shawn Fields for the role to support its national presence, according to WLS yesterday.

Rich Collins, outgoing president, will continue serving on WLS’ board and as a consultant.

“Western Land Services strategically recruited one of the oil and gas industry’s finest leaders with Shawn, who brings a wide range of experience and contacts in the energy business – not to mention an innate understanding of our customers’ needs from his tenure at top energy firms,” said John Wilson, CEO, Western Land Services.

Fields has 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry and 10 years in executive leadership roles.

He came to WLS from NextEra Energy Resources, where he was executive director of upstream development in Houston.

Previously, Fields worked for 13 years at Chesapeake Energy Corporation, a publicly traded company based in Oklahoma City. There, he advanced from manager to VP of acquisitions and divestitures.

He began his career at Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Samson Resources, where he worked in project development, as supervisor of project development and as district landman over 11 years.

“I am incredibly excited to lead Western Land Services and continue its tradition of excellence as one of Michigan’s top energy businesses, while also positioning the company as a national firm,” Fields said.

He is a member of the American Association of Professional Landmen, as well as multiple affiliated local associations, including the Michigan Association of Professional Landmen, Oklahoma City Association of Professional Landmen and Denver Petroleum Club.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma.
