Firm begins $3.5M lakeshore apartment project

An apartment building with ground-floor retail is in the works in a lakeshore town.

O’Connor Development and a.j. Veneklasen, Inc. have begun site clearing for South Haven Center, a $3.5-million development on the corner of Center and Huron streets.

“We saw an area where we felt we could utilize our company’s experience and talents,” said Chris Veneklasen, president, a.j. Veneklasen, Inc. “Our staff is eager to take on this project, and we hope this is the first of many similar opportunities.”

The .3-acre plot will be home to a 23,0000-square-foot mixed-use development, featuring 18 apartments.

South Have Center will offer one-bedroom apartments from 630 to 775 square feet and two-bedroom apartments from 870 to 975 square feet.

“This is one of the largest and most exciting developments downtown South Haven has seen in over a decade,” South Haven Mayor Scott Smith said. “It has been terrific working with so many partners who share in our vision of creating a vibrant Center Street corridor.”

The project is owned by O’Connor Development, and Veneklasen, Inc. is handling leasing.

Grand Rapids-based R2 Design Group is the project’s architect.

Financing on the project is from First National Bank and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
