Hospital donates $68K for adaptive bikes
A local hospital’s donation is helping offset the cost of adaptive bikes for 85 children and adults with physical disabilities.
The $68,000 donation from the Mary Free Bed Guild — the governing body of Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids — will help people purchase adaptive bikes, which can range from $20 for some used bikes to $6,000 for others.
The donation will be combined with insurance coverage for each purchase, with the remaining cost covered by the recipient.
The recipients are being paired with therapists to help match their physical needs with the most appropriate biking equipment.
The participants were introduced to the bikes at Mary Free Bed’s annual Bikes For the Rest of Us event, which highlights a variety of special cycling equipment from local and regional bike shops, medical equipment suppliers and manufacturers.
