A nonprofit that provides services necessary for organ donation has recognized a hospital and a health care pro in its first Donation Champion Awards.

Gift of Life Michigan gave the Innovation Award to Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo and the Donation Liaison award to Adam Mencarelli of Spectrum Health.

The hospital was chosen for its collaborative work over many months to create an electronic

medical records system that will automatically refer donors to Gift of Life. The system is the first of its kind in the country and is expected to transform the way donor referrals are made.

“What Ascension Borgess Hospital has done with this donor referral system is unrivaled anywhere in the country, and it simply wouldn’t have happened without the hospital’s commitment to donation and its willingness to collaborate at an extremely high level,” said Dorrie Dils, CEO, Gift of Life Michigan.

“The law requires hospitals to make referrals, but it has always taken time for staff to do it. This will change everything.”

Mencarelli, a nurse manager at Spectrum Health, was recognized for maintaining Spectrum’s new donor memorial, working to make it more meaningful for families of donors. He was also instrumental in the update of a donation policy that has resulted in more kidneys donated and lives saved.

“His drive to serve and remember donors and to honor their families is apparent in the work he does,” Dils said.
