GRPS appoints interim superintendent
Grand Rapids Public Schools has named an interim leader.
The district's board voted yesterday to appoint Ron Gorman as interim superintendent, effective July 1. Contract details, including salary and length of service, will be negotiated.
After meeting two superintendent candidates last month, the GRPS board voted to re-start the search, which began shortly after Teresa Weatherall Neal announced her retirement in September 2018.
Gorman is the GRPS assistant superintendent of pre-K-12 instructional support.
He has spent more than two decades with GRPS, including as an elementary teacher, secondary teacher, high school assistant principal, high school athletic director, K-8 principal, high school principal and executive director of secondary schools.
Gorman also served eight years in the U.S. Army Reserve.
He holds a B.A. from Aquinas College, a master of educational leadership from Michigan State University and a doctor of philosophy in educational leadership from Western Michigan University.
He has also attended professional education programs at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and New York City Leadership Academy.
