College raising $3M
A local college has launched a public effort to raise $3 million.
Grand Rapids Community College has $3 million left to reach its $15-million capital campaign goal.
The GRCC Foundation has raised $12 million toward the goal with donations from community leaders, local businesses, area foundations and GRCC employees.
The campaign will help fund $37.4 million in projects: including $14.7 million to renovate and re-name its nearly 100-year-old main building as Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall; $12 million for a 20,000-foot expansion of the Wisner-Bottrall Applied Technology Center; and $10.7 million for expanded scholarship investment.
To fund these projects, GRCC previously raised $10 million from lead donor gifts, $6.4 million from the state of Michigan and $6 million from the GRCC Foundation.
About 1,000 GRCC students received scholarships last year, but many more need help, campaign leaders said.
The campaign’s co-chairs are real estate developer Dr. Jim Buzzitta, GRCC board member Deb Bailey and Varnum attorney Larry Murphy.
“The need for scholarship support has never been greater,” Murphy said.
