The Grand Rapids Downtown Market has named a new director to its team.

Downtown Market hired Sarah Bokina as its director of human resources and administrative/culinary operations, according to the market last month.

Bokina is responsible for ensuring “consistent and effective internal processes and communications to strengthen the Downtown Market’s programs, with the goal of positioning the organization for continued success and long-term growth.”

Bokina has worked in the HR field for more than 10 years, most recently as director of HR at John Ball Zoo, where she oversaw the HR, safety and volunteer departments.

She was the first HR professional ever directly employed by the zoo, and she helped create the department and its HR functions, according to the Downtown Market.

Additionally, Bokina served as a member of the zoo’s executive leadership team, where she focused on strategic planning and organizational development.

She is certified by the Society for Human Resource Management and Human Resources Certification Institute.

She holds a B.S. in business administration and HR management from Ferris State University and an M.S. in HR management from Central Michigan University.
