Two health systems have joined forces to offer increased orthotic and prosthetic care in the region.

Grand Rapids-based Mary Free Bed now is offering the services at Spectrum Health Lakeland in St. Joseph, giving greater access to orthotics and prosthetics patients in southwest Michigan and northern Indiana, according to Mary Free Bed last month.

The services are based inside a new clinical office at 2500 Niles Rd. in St. Joseph and also will be provided at various Lakeland sites, including its three hospitals, outpatient clinics and other acute and post-acute care facilities in the area.

The practice offers certified orthotists and prosthetists from Mary Free Bed who help fit patients with adaptive equipment, such as cranial re-shaping helmets, artificial limbs and external braces, designed to enhance and improve their functional ability after a serious injury, illness or other debilitating condition.

Mary Free Bed clinicians have been seeing Lakeland patients on a limited basis since early 2018, primarily through a pediatric orthotic clinic.

The joint venture was effective April 1. The flow of patients will ramp up in the next couple weeks, following minor renovations at the base location.
