There’s a new specialized dental practice in town.

Pediatric Dental Specialists of West Michigan launched this spring in Grand Rapids, at 2155 E. Paris Ave. SE.

Led by board-certified pediatric dentists Kathryn Swanson, D.D.S., and Stephanie Kloostra, D.D.S., M.S., the practice is designed around the oral health of kids, from infancy to adolescence.

“We wanted to create a space where children and families can have a fun and comfortable experience going to the dentist,” Swanson said. “We both had great experiences working at other practices but felt we needed to start our own practice in order to give our patients and families the best experience possible.”

The practice offers preventative care, including regular exams and cleanings, restorative care, laser dentistry and sedation dentistry.

A laser is used for frenectomies, which are sometimes needed for children to relieve a lip or tongue tie.

The office accepts referrals from lactation consultants, speech therapists, pediatricians and other health professionals for these procedures.

“Most people don’t know that they should schedule a child’s first dental visit when their first tooth erupts or by age 1,” Kloostra said. “We want to get patients in earlier to ensure that they have the best start for a lifetime of oral health.”

The office is built with children and families in mind and includes a custom-built playhouse in the waiting room, along with other stations for coloring and playing.

Patient rooms have iPads for playing kids shows during treatment appointments. Other screens around the office show photos of staff members’ kids and pets.

Besides the dentists, the office has eight full-time staff, including registered pediatric dental hygienists, registered dental assistants and front-desk scheduling and insurance staff.

Pediatric Dental Specialists of West Michigan is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The office’s interior design was done by Kathryn Chaplow. First Companies was the project's general contractor. Lake Michigan Credit Union provided financing for the project.

Stephanie Kloostra

Kloostra began practicing in Hudsonville, where she helped start a pediatric practice within a general dental office.

Kloostra holds a D.D.S. and a master’s degree in pediatric dentistry from the University of Michigan.

Her undergrad degree, with concentrations in biology, biochemistry and Spanish, is from Calvin College.

She is a board-certified pediatric dentist, is certified through the American Board of Laser Surgery and is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

She serves on the board of the West Michigan Dental Foundation and provides continuing education courses on pediatric dentistry topics.

Katie Swanson

Swanson began practicing pediatric dentistry in Grand Haven and then transitioned to a practice in Hudsonville, where she worked with Kloostra before they opened their practice.

After Swanson received her D.D.S. from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, she studied pediatric dentistry at the University of Pennsylvania and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. There, she saw patients with complex special health care needs and developed a deeper understanding of child development and pediatric dentistry.

Her undergrad degree is from the University of Michigan, where she studied brain, behavior and cognitive sciences, with a focus on child development.

She is a board-certified pediatric dentist, is certified through the American Board of Laser Surgery and is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
