An independent hospital in the region is becoming part of a large health care system.

Allegan-based Allegan Healthcare Group has signed a definitive agreement to join St. Louis-based Ascension, effective Sept. 1.

The nonprofit Allegan Healthcare Group includes the 25-bed Allegan General Hospital, a federally designated critical access hospital, as well as Allegan Professional Health Services and the Allegan General Hospital Foundation.

The group has 16 employed primary care providers and ambulatory services across Allegan and Van Buren counties.

When Allegan joins Ascension, it will adopt the unified Ascension brand and identity.

Neither party disclosed additional information.

Ascension Michigan operates 15 hospitals in Michigan, including the Kalamazoo-based Borgess health system.

“The addition of Allegan General Hospital to Ascension Michigan will strengthen health care access and delivery for area residents and ensure the continued provision of high quality health care well into the future,” said Dr. Tim Stover, interim ministry market executive for Ascension Michigan.
