Hospital appoints chief medical officer
A local hospital has selected a new chief medical officer.
Dr. Matt Biersack is taking the position for Mercy Health Saint Mary's, overseeing all acute care activities in the Grand Rapids area, including the hospital and emergency departments.
Biersack will partner with Dr. Thomas Foster, CMO of Mercy Health Physician Partners, for ambulatory care site operations. Foster will continue overseeing all Mercy Health physician practices.
Biersack succeeds Dr. David Baumgartner, who will retire on Aug. 30.
Biersack began his career as an internal medicine resident at Mercy Health in 2007. He has served in various capacities since 2010, including as a full-time hospitalist, medical director for the hospitalist group and most recently, chief quality and patient safety officer.
He was also acting as interim chief medical officer while Baumgartner was acting as interim president.
"Over the years, Dr. Biersack has demonstrated strong leadership skills," said Dr. Hyung Kim, president, Mercy Health Saint Mary's. "He has filled prior leadership gaps in process excellence and risk management and has previously served as interim CMO. He was a natural choice for this position."
He holds a bachelor of engineering from the University of Michigan and is a graduate of the Wayne State University School of Medicine.
He is a member of the American Association for Physician Leadership.
