A local college is purchasing a building in the region that formerly housed a department store.

Grand Rapids Community College plans to buy the former JCPenney space at The Shops at Westshore in Holland Township, at 12331 James St., to consolidate its Lakeshore Campus, according to GRCC yesterday.

GRCC’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved plans yesterday to purchase the 50,000-square-foot building, expected to be about $2 million.

The new campus building will allow GRCC to consolidate programs and student support services in a larger space, increase employer and educator partnerships and enhance teaching and learning.

The location presents opportunities to expand programs. GRCC leaders will look for input from lakeshore educators and community leaders on what additional programs would be most beneficial.

The property is located on a bus line, making it more accessible for students, and is surrounded by businesses and services.

The building will require renovations, and the goal is to have classes in the space by the fall 2021 semester.

GRCC will transfer programs to the new campus from its four current Holland locations: Patrick A. Thompson M-TEC, 6364 136th Ave.; Midtown Center, 96 West 15th St.; GVSU Meijer Campus, 515 S Waverly Rd.; and Careerline Tech Center, 13663 Port Sheldon Rd.

GRCC's partnership with the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District will remain.

The JCPenney location closed in 2017.
