A local university has a new dean for one of its colleges.

Grand Valley State University’s new dean for the College of Education is Sherril Soman, who has been serving as the college’s interim dean since July 2018.

Soman joined the GVSU chemistry department in 2000 and has since worked in several roles, including associate VP for enrollment development and university registrar, director of financial aid, interim assistant VP for academic affairs and associate dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

"Dr. Soman has built solid relationships with and garnered the support and trust of faculty and staff within the College of Education in the time she has served as interim dean," GVSU Provost Maria Cimitile said.

"Dr. Soman continues to move the college forward at a challenging time for post-secondary education and embraces new opportunities in the ever-changing field of teacher preparation."

Soman has expertise in curriculum development, assessment and strategic planning and served on a university committee in preparation for the Higher Learning Commission re-accreditation visit that took place in fall 2018.

A chemistry educator by training, Soman is co-leading re-certification of the chemistry major by the Michigan Department of Education.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Prairie View A&M University and a doctorate in chemistry from Purdue University.
