Grocery chain raises $300K for ‘patriotic partners’
The foundation of a locally based grocery chain has raised $300,000 for military heroes and their families through a retail scan campaign.
Through checkout donations from its store customers, the SpartanNash Foundation, the charitable arm of Byron Center-based SpartanNash, raised the sum for its patriotic nonprofit partners: Team Red, White & Blue; Operation Homefront; and Honor and Remember.
Between June 26 and July 7, customers who visited any participating SpartanNash-owned store or fuel center could donate $1, $5 or $10 or round their total up to the nearest dollar to support the trio of patriotic partners.
More than 135 stores participated in the scan campaign, primarily Family Fare, D&W Fresh Market, VG’s Grocery, Dan’s Supermarket and Family Fresh Market stores.
The funds from the campaign, evenly split among the three patriotic nonprofits, will be used in several ways: to connect servicemembers, veterans and their families to their local communities through physical and social activity; provide critical financial assistance and family support services; and honor those who lost their lives as a result of defending our freedoms.
“One of our company’s core values is patriotism, and SpartanNash and the SpartanNash Foundation are deeply committed to supporting our military heroes in the communities we serve,” said Meredith Gremel, VP of corporate affairs and communications at SpartanNash and executive director of the SpartanNash Foundation.
Since 2016, the SpartanNash Foundation has raised more than $1 million for its patriotic partners through its scan campaigns, including Give an Hour, Fisher House Foundation, Blue Star Mothers of America and the Disabled Veterans National Foundation.
The patriotic retail scan campaign is the third of four fundraising campaigns the SpartanNash Foundation will conduct in 2019.
SpartanNash Foundation has raised $734,700 to date on behalf of local Habitat for Humanity and Special Olympics partners in eight states through the other three campaigns.
