Manufacturer building 36-acre campus
A maker of conveyor belt solutions is moving its local operation to a larger campus in the area.
Downers Grove, Illinois-based Flexco will be moving its Michigan operation, currently based on 19 acres at 1995 Oak Industrial Dr. NE in Grand Rapids, to a 36-acre parcel at 1920 Northridge Dr. NW in Walker, according to the company last week.
The move is driven by “growing global demand for Flexco products,” necessitating a “larger, fully integrated facility” with “world-class manufacturing technology and increased support staff.” The larger lot will also provide room for growth.
“Flexco is excited to once again be announcing the expansion of the company’s footprint in West Michigan,” said Richard White, president and CEO, Flexco.
The new “state-of-the-art facility” in Walker will allow the Flexco to “remain anchored” in West Michigan and provide “direct access to the highly skilled and talented workforce that resides here,” White said.
Flexco is purchasing the parcel from RDG Walker LLC for an undisclosed sum.
Construction, which began this month, is expected to be completed in early 2021. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 18.
Grand Rapids-based Progressive AE is the serving as the project’s architect, and Grand Rapids-based Pioneer Construction is the project’s general contractor.
The project’s cost was not disclosed.
Currently, Flexco has a 38,000-square-foot research and development and marketing facility and a 155,000-square-foot manufacturing facility at its Grand Rapids location, for a total footprint of 193,000 square feet.
The new facility will encompass 288,000 square feet on 36 acres, with 65,000 square feet of that representing office, wellness and training space and the rest housing engineering, manufacturing and marketing functions.
Flexco employs over 150 people in West Michigan, and all of those employees will transfer to the new facility in Walker.
Flexco said the relocation will not result in new positions immediately, but based upon anticipated sales growth, it projects a 30% increase in headcount during the next five years.
Founded in 1907, Flexco provides belt conveyor operators with efficient and safe products for mechanical splicing, belt cleaning, belt tracking, spillage, slippage and more.
The company employs more than 700 people worldwide, with multiple subsidiaries: in Grand Rapids, Australia, Chile, China, England, Germany, India, Mexico, Singapore and South Africa.
It has over 1,800 global distributors.
