A nonprofit is hosting a pitch competition downtown this week for female-owned startups.

Eight startups will compete for funding in Michigan Women Forward’s WomanUp & Pitch Competition on Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to noon at GVSU’s L. William Seidman Center in Grand Rapids, at 50 Front St.

The participating companies, divided into lifestyle and growth categories, have been narrowed down from an initial field of more than 160 applicants. All finalists receive support services and technical assistance.

Each category will have a $10,000 first-place winner, a $5,000 second-place winner, a $2,500 third-place winner and a $1,000 audience choice winner.

“This influx of capital can make a real difference to our winners as they start or grow their businesses,” said Carolyn Cassin, president and CEO, Michigan Women Forward.
