A local staffing agency is hosting a summit that will provide best practices for hiring, onboarding and retaining military veterans.

Express Employment Professionals of Grand Rapids, or Express Pros, will host its Veteran Employment Summit on Nov. 21 from 7:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The event — which is expected to draw more than 200 attendees — will take place at Calvin University’s Prince Conference Center in Grand Rapids, at 1800 E. Beltline Ave. SE.

Heather Merrick, an Army veteran and Express Pros of Grand Rapids’ HR consultant and recruiter, is organizing the event.

“Michigan has one of the largest veteran populations in the country, so if employers aren’t tapping into this valuable workforce, they are missing out,” Merrick said. “We are excited to host this summit and help both veterans and employers be more successful through sharing these best practices with local companies.”

First Sergeant Matt Eversmann (Ret.) — whose experiences are portrayed in the film “Black Hawk Down” and who is now a veteran employment consultant — will be the keynote speaker at 8 a.m.

There will be three breakout sessions with six options to choose from that will offer “best practices and tools to launch or improve your veteran hiring and retention initiatives.”

Topics include interpreting military resumes, understanding military culture and how to create and implement a veteran hiring program.

Professionals working toward Society for Human Resource Management and HR Certification Institute re-certifications can earn four credits by attending the event.

Tickets are $125 and include training materials and breakfast.

People can register for the event online.
