The foundation of a locally based grocery chain has granted more than 115 U.S. food pantries the funding to pay for 3.5 million meals this holiday season.

The SpartanNash Foundation, the charitable arm of Byron Center-based SpartanNash, said this week its retail scan campaign to provide hunger relief raised $271,150 for more than 100 local food pantries and food banks in Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

The SpartanNash Foundation also granted $5,000 apiece, or $75,000 in total, to 15 food pantries in Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Virginia, bringing the foundation’s total hunger relief impact this holiday season to $346,150 — enough to purchase 3.5 million meals, the foundation said.

“These funds will be used to put food on so many families’ tables both during the holiday season and throughout the year, providing hunger relief where it’s needed most,” said Meredith Gremel, executive director of the SpartanNash Foundation.

Between Oct. 23 and Nov. 3, people who visited any participating SpartanNash-owned retail store or fuel center in eight states could donate $1, $5 or $10 or round up to the nearest dollar at any checkout lane, supporting local food pantries and food banks chosen by the participating store.

All funds raised through scan campaigns are granted to the foundation’s national, regional and local nonprofit partners.

The hunger scan was the fourth scan campaign the SpartanNash Foundation did in 2019, raising $1,005,850 for local Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, patriotic partners and local food banks — the third consecutive year the fundraising efforts have topped $1 million.

Top fundraising efforts included:

  • $15,100 granted to God’s Kitchen on behalf of Forest Hills Foods, D&W Fresh Market and Family Fare stores in Grand Rapids
  • $7,100 granted to Food Bank of South Central Michigan on behalf of Family Fare stores in Marshall, Urbandale, Delton and Battle Creek
  • $5,100 granted to Family Network of Wyoming on behalf of Family Fare stores in Wyoming
  • $5,050 granted to Fishers of Men Ministries on behalf of Family Fare stores in Holland and Zeeland
