A local agency that offers birth and postpartum services earned certification as a benefit corporation.

Grand Rapids-based Gold Coast Doulas recently earned B Corp status from the national nonprofit B Lab, according to the agency this week.

Gold Coast is the 19th B Corp in West Michigan and the 24th in the state.

“As a locally owned business, we felt it was important to communicate our values of service and sustainability to our clients,” said Kristin Revere, co-owner of Gold Coast Doulas. “We were founded on giving back and caring for our community, so it just made sense to become a B Corp.

“We are thrilled to be a part of the growing B Corp movement and continue to find ways to make a positive impact in West Michigan.”

B Lab rates companies applying for B Corp certification based on their ability to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency.

Gold Coast highlighted its “positive impact” such as giving time and money to charities serving low-income women and children, going paperless with contracts in 2017 and reducing its environmental footprint by moving into the Kingsley Building in Grand Rapids’ Eastown neighborhood.

Bazzani Building Company, which was one of the first Michigan B Corps, recently restored the Kingsley Building, and it now has Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) status.

Gold Coast Doulas said becoming B Corp certified has played a big part in the agency’s growth. The organization expanded its team from four subcontracted doulas at its launch five years ago to 17 doulas and two board-certified lactation consultants today.

“Gold Coast Doulas has always taken an innovative approach to use business as a force for good, which is why we’re so excited that they are now a part of the B Corp community,” said Alice Jasper, program manager for Good for Michigan, a program of Grand Rapids-based Local First.

“It has been an honor to work with them through the certification process. We hope other businesses will be as inspired by their dedication as we are.”

B Corps

B Lab has certified more than 3,214 companies from 71 countries and 150 industries as B Corps.

Local First is the local organization that coaches companies through the process beginning with administering the Quick Impact Assessment (QIA) through the nonprofit’s Good for Michigan program.

Other West Michigan companies designated as B Corps include Brewery Vivant, Cascade Engineering,  Atomic Object, The Gluten Free Bar, Highland Group, Image Shoppe and more.

Gold Coast Doulas
