A national health system with a presence throughout Michigan named the state’s top leader.

On Feb. 9, Dr. Kenneth Berkovitz took the roles of ministry market executive for Ascension Michigan and senior vice president for St. Louis-based Ascension.

Since 2018, Berkovitz has been president of Ascension Medical Group in Michigan.

“In this role, and earlier in his distinguished career, he has demonstrated a commitment to collaboration, a focus on patient-centered care and the mindset of a true servant leader,” said Craig Cordola, executive vice president and COO of Ascension. “Dr. Berkovitz is a respected, strategic clinical and administrative leader who has a history of delivering measurable success for large health systems.”

Prior to Ascension Michigan, Berkovitz was CEO of the Cardiovascular Institute of OSF Healthcare System in Peoria, Illinois, where he was responsible for strategy and execution, staff development, finance and management of the system’s cardiovascular service line. Previously, he held a similar role with Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio.

“As a physician, I am keenly focused on the health care of the future and how we will continue to provide exemplary care to our patients in new ways, via new technologies, where and when they need it most,” Berkovitz said.

A board-certified cardiologist and diplomate in interventional cardiology, Berkovitz earned his medical degree at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville.

He completed his internship and residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland and was a senior fellow in interventional cardiology and a fellow in cardiovascular disease at the Krannert Institute of Cardiology at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis.

While at Summa Akron City Hospital, he received the Service Excellence Award, which recognizes physicians who perform above the 90th percentile nationally in HCAHPS inpatient scores. He was named a Heart Champion in 2007 by the American Heart Association and received the Elite Patient Service Award numerous times as part of Northeast Ohio Cardiology Specialists.

Ascension operates 15 hospitals in Michigan, including Ascension Borgess in Kalamazoo.
