A West Michigan maker of medical devices and equipment was rated one of the nation’s best employers.

Kalamazoo-based Stryker ranks No. 8 in Fortune’s 2020 list of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” in the U.S., the 10th year it has been recognized.

Last year, Stryker ranked No. 11 on the Fortune list, which was founded 23 years ago to recognize companies that have exceptional workplace cultures.

Stryker was the only West Michigan-based company to make the list.

“Being named to the ‘100 Best Companies to Work For’ list for a decade is an honor that we attribute to our people and culture,” said Katy Fink, vice president and chief human resources officer for Stryker.

“Our employees are driven to deliver on our mission to make health care better. We celebrate them and their many contributions that make Stryker a great place to work.”

At the time of the survey, Stryker reported 19,941 employees at 120 work sites with nearly $14.9 billion in annual revenue.

Methodology

Fortune partners with research firm Great Place to Work (GPTW) to create the list, which represents the feedback of employees at U.S. companies with a workforce of 1,000 or more.

GPTW scores each company on its analysis of anonymous employee responses to more than 60 questions.

More than 4.1 million workers were surveyed and over 650,000 responded.

Eighty-five percent of the evaluation is based on what employees report about their experiences of trust and reaching their full human potential as part of their organization. The reported experiences are then analyzed relative to each organization’s size, workforce makeup and what’s typical in their industry and region.

In addition, GPTW evaluated each companies’ programs and practices as measured through a “culture audit.”

GPTW ranks the “100 Best Companies to Work For” by comparing participants’ scores against similarly sized peers to choose companies that perform the best on characteristics such as being a great place to work for all, executive team effectiveness, innovation and people-focused programs.

Each company in the ranking received a 95% confidence level and 5% margin of error or better.
